Description

Not many timeshare resorts can boast that they have an entire mountain to enjoy and explore, but that’s the attraction for owners at Christie Village, a legacy interval-ownership complex in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Christie Village is in Beech Mountain, the highest incorporated town east of the Rockies at an altitude of 5,506 feet. With just 350 year-round residents, the population swells to as high as 5,000 in summer and 10,000 in winter, all coming to take advantage of the many recreational activities that make the Christie Village area a fun destination at any time of year. Built originally as ski condos and converted to timeshare use in the 1980s, Christie Village is ideally located less than a half-mile from the entrance to Beech Mountain Resort, one of a very few ski areas operating in the southeastern United States. Although the original architect of Christie Village designed the complex as a winter ski village, it has evolved into a year-round complex.

Unique Interiors Each of the 14 units, organized as a series of seven three-story condos, is situated to take advantage of the view. They are staggered in plan to afford privacy and stepped down at four-foot intervals to conform to the sloping site. The parking area in front is level and spacious to accommodate trucks, cars, and RVs. The interior of each unit is unique. All have wood walls, some of which reach from the floor up onto the ceiling.

Each building contains a two-bedroom and a three-bedroom condo. They share a common covered entry, which also contains a storage closet and a bench for taking off your ski boots. As you enter each building, the two-bedroom unit is down a half-flight of stairs. There you will find a fully equipped kitchen, and a screened door leading onto a deck overlooking the back grounds and heavily wooded lot. The two bedrooms, bathroom, and kitchen are on the same level; the sunken living room, with a wood-burning fireplace, is a few steps down. A door opens onto the heavily wooded back yard. The three-bedroom two-bath condo is a duplex, with the first level a half-flight up from the entryway. A covered deck off the kitchen is a nice place to sit and relax. On this level are two bedrooms and a bath, plus the fully equipped kitchen and a dining room with a wood-burning fireplace. Upstairs are the master bedroom and master bathroom, the living room, and another covered deck. Some units have a full living room with an additional fireplace, while others have a balcony overlooking the two-story dining area. The units have cozy décor, with a full-sized sofa, and some have sleeper sofas and recliners. All have a wood-burning fireplace, a flat-screen cable TV, and include free Wi-Fi and weekly housekeeping.

Owners and guests have access to an on-site laundry. Although a majority of our Christie Village owners use their weeks at the home resort, many of them elect to deposit and exchange their weeks through our multiple exchange affiliations. A Resort for All Seasons Christie Village’s location and elevation set it apart, and the high altitude is especially conducive to winter activities. Beech Mountain Resort, our close neighbor, offers skiing and winter fun and activities for the entire family. You’ll find day and night skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, sledding, and every winter sport. In addition, a charming Alpine Village with intriguing shops, restaurants and bars, is located near Christie Village The Town of Beech Mountain and the Chamber of Commerce provide many events, most free and all family-friendly.

A free sledding hill, located next to the town hall, operates daily with a combination of natural and man-made snow. Christie Village provides free sleds for use by our owners, which can be used on the town’s sledding hill or on our property. After the long winter, spring brings an awakening. Trees sprout and flowers bloom.

It’s a perfect time to escape cabin fever, get outdoors, and enjoy the surrounding area. The heart of Beach Mountain has a greenway system, and more than 20 miles of hiking trails surround the town. Beech Mountain is both family-friendly and pet-friendly. A newly opened one-acre Bark Park has one fenced-in play area for large dogs and another for small dogs. The Blue Ridge Parkway is close by. It travels 252 miles along the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. You can phone a Parkway Information hotline to get the latest wildflower bloom report, with details on the best viewing times for local blooms with exotic names such as skunk cabbage, birdfoot violets, Indian paintbrush, Dutchman’s breeches, witch hobble-hobblebush, and the more widely known Carolina rhododendron. Quilt Trails and Cycling Spring is a perfect time to take a day trip and drive the many barn quilt trails in the area. Hand-painted quilts adorn the outsides of barns, homes, schools and even businesses. Maps are available to take you from the Watauga quilt trail to the neighboring counties of Avery, Ashe, Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey, all of which participate in the quilt trail project. May is especially busy on Beech Mountain as everyone prepares to host several bicycling events. Training rides culminate in The Beech Mountain Metric, a 63-mile ride with 8,600 feet of climbing to the top of the mountain, the famed climb of past Tour DuPont rides. Summer comes slowly to the high country, where temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s, rarely exceeding 79 degrees F.

It’s perfect golfing weather at the many championship courses in our area, and perfect riding weather for the annual Blood, Sweat and Gears, another cycling event held in June. A new summer activity, growing in popularity, is Disc Golf, which the Beech Mountain Resort recently added to its growing list of activities. Many of our owners escape to Christie Village for the cool summer to enjoy the array of outdoor activities. Vibrant Fall Color Fall ushers in one of the longest and most vibrant seasons, bringing an explosion of color to the Christie Village area. Our grounds have many trees, and the changing of seasons is a beautiful sight. In most Christie Village units, you can view the fall leaves up close from eye level. Beech Mountain hosts the annual “Day at Oz” the first weekend in October. Find your heart, use your brain, and have courage enough to follow the yellow brick road over the rainbow to the peak of Beech Mountain. Many attendees dress the part of their favorite characters. You’ll find Dorothy and all her friends, as well as crafts, music, and entertainment. This celebration of all things Oz makes that week one of the most popular weeks to own at Christie Village.

Fall starts to wind down during the third week of October, when the small village of Banner Elk, located at the foot of Beech Mountain, celebrates the coming of the snow season with the Woolly Worm Festival. The local folklore is that the Woolly Bear caterpillar can predict how harsh the coming winter will be and how much snow will fall. The festival signals the end of the harvest season, and brings us full circle back to our most popular season, winter. The seasons change, and Christie Village is changing as well. Still self-managed, it has a new, active, involved board of administrators and renewed participation and involvement by member owners. Working together, our goal is to renovate and rejuvenate the property to restore and protect our mutual long-term investment.

Christie Village continues to evolve as a timeshare moving forward, offering our owners true value in interval ownership, today and for many years to come. Jan Van Rooyen is the Christie Village marketing committee chairperson. TimeSharing Today readers: Take 20% off our affordable weekly rates.
